Voyis recently achieved Bureau Veritas (BV) certification for the Discovery Stereo‘s accuracy, reinforcing our commitment to delivering precise and reliable underwater inspection solutions. However, a key limitation of the BV certification process, which applies to both Voyis and our competitors, is that it is conducted on a single reference unit. This limitation raises concerns about whether all units shipped to customers meet the same high standards.

Linear Accuracy (Distance Metrology) Verification on Every Unit

Unlike competitors who may validate only their “best” unit for certification purposes, Voyis ensures that every Discovery Stereo unit sold undergoes the same rigorous Beam Metrology test outlined in the BV certification. Each unit is verified post-calibration to achieve the accuracy specified in our datasheet. This critical process is meticulously documented in the Calibration Report provided with every unit, giving customers confidence that their system meets the highest standards.

Voyis’ Industry-Leading Calibration Process

To consistently achieve the high accuracy specifications of the Discovery Stereo, Voyis has developed an industry-leading calibration process. This comprehensive approach ensures that each unit performs optimally in real-world conditions.

Image Sharpness Optimization:

Achieving the sharpest possible input images is crucial for accurate photogrammetry. Each Discovery Stereo camera is subjected to a quantitative validation process to ensure optimum image sharpness (Modulation Transfer Function, MTF) across both cameras. This process guarantees that both close-up and distant targets remain in focus, supported by standardized focus charts at nominal range.

Precision Alignment:

Optimal optical performance requires precise alignment of the camera, optics, and viewport. Voyis employs innovative fixtures and procedures to maintain tight tolerances, ensuring consistent quality across all units. This meticulous alignment unlocks the full potential of the optical system.

Intrinsic Calibration:

Each Discovery Stereo undergoes intrinsic calibration in Voyis’ proprietary underwater test fixture to account for internal optical parameters. This step is essential for accurately interpreting raw image data and generating properly scaled 3D reconstructions.

Stereo Calibration:

To achieve accurate 3D reconstruction, the cameras undergo an extrinsic calibration process that defines the spatial relationship between the two cameras. This calibration models the relative position and orientation using a rotation and translation matrix, ensuring precise image rectification for optimal 3D reconstruction.

IMU Calibration:

The Discovery Stereo also undergoes IMU calibration to precisely model the position of the internal Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) relative to the cameras. Accurately measuring this offset is critical for integrating IMU data with real-time 3D modeling in the Voyis VSLAM software, enhancing situational awareness and data accuracy.

Delivering Confidence with Every Unit

Voyis’ rigorous calibration process ensures that every Discovery Stereo unit meets the highest standards of accuracy and reliability. By implementing a comprehensive validation process on every unit, we provide our customers with confidence that their system will perform consistently in even the most demanding underwater environments.

With Voyis, customers receive more than just a certified product—they gain a reliable solution backed by meticulous calibration and unwavering commitment to quality.
