July 2024 marked a milestone for Voyis, as we partnered with MarineNav to integrate our Discovery Stereo Camera with the MarineNav Oceanus Ultimate ROV. This collaboration, conducted in Ontario, Canada, culminated in a successful hull inspection demonstration showcasing the strengths of this integrated solution. Today, we’re excited to share the second part of our video series, where we delve into the critical role of chain inspections and how our technology is redefining underwater asset management.

The Importance of Chain Inspections

Hull chains play a crucial role in stabilizing and securing vessels during anchoring, mooring, and berthing operations. Over time, these chains are exposed to extreme marine environments, which can result in corrosion, fatigue, biofouling, and even deformation due to strain. Regular inspections are essential to maintain their structural integrity, as undetected damage could compromise safety, lead to operational issues, or even result in costly repairs.

Traditional methods of inspecting hull chains typically involve divers, which is a labor-intensive, time-consuming, and risky process. Advanced ROV technology offers a new approach, providing safe, efficient, and highly detailed inspections that reveal the condition of every link in the chain.

The Powerhouse Duo: Voyis Discovery Stereo Camera and MarineNav Oceanus Ultimate ROV

The integration of the Voyis Discovery Stereo Camera with the MarineNav Oceanus Ultimate ROV provides an exceptional solution for chain inspections. The Discovery Stereo Camera captures high-resolution, 3D optical data in real time, delivering precise measurements and detailed imagery. This high-definition data allows inspectors to identify wear, deformation, and corrosion across chain links, enhancing the ability to evaluate their structural health.

The Oceanus Ultimate ROV, known for its stability and adaptability in diverse underwater conditions, complements the Discovery Stereo Camera’s capabilities. Its maneuverability enables it to approach and inspect chains closely, moving seamlessly around links to capture images from all necessary angles. This combined system ensures that no potential damage on any link goes unnoticed, enabling comprehensive inspections with ease.

Enhanced Mapping with Voyis VSLAM Powered by EIVA NaviSuite

Voyis VSLAM Powered by EIVA NaviSuite brings additional benefits to this inspection system. The VSLAM solution provides real-time 3D mapping and localization, allowing the ROV to navigate along complex chain structures with unmatched precision. For hull chain inspections, this technology is invaluable, enabling the ROV to create detailed, spatially accurate maps of the chain as it moves along each link.

Through VSLAM’s precise positioning and mapping, inspectors can generate a comprehensive 3D model of the entire hull chain structure, making it easy to track changes and identify vulnerabilities over time. The combination of high-resolution 3D imagery from the Discovery Stereo Camera and the advanced mapping capabilities of VSLAM ensures that chain inspections are as thorough and accurate as possible, enhancing asset management and safety protocols.

The successful integration of the Voyis Discovery Stereo Camera with the MarineNav Oceanus Ultimate ROV signifies a breakthrough in subsea inspection technology. For hull chain inspections, this powerful system offers a solution that is not only safe and efficient but also provides the detailed, reliable data required to maintain the integrity of critical marine assets.

As Voyis continues to lead in underwater technology innovation, we look forward to sharing more insights and outcomes from our expeditions. Stay tuned for further videos and blog posts as we explore the capabilities of our solutions in real-world applications.
