For the first edition of our Integration Spotlight series, we’re featuring one of our most versatile and capability-rich collaborations: the integration of Voyis underwater optical sensors on the VideoRay Defender ROV. This pairing demonstrates how a compact, inspection-class vehicle can deliver advanced, data-driven results when equipped with high-resolution imaging and laser measurement tools.
The Defender has earned a strong reputation for stability, modularity, and power, making it an excellent platform for precision inspection tasks across marine infrastructure, energy, and environmental applications. By integrating multiple Voyis systems, the Discovery Stereo, the Discovery Camera, and the Insight Micro laser system, the ROV gains a complete optical inspection suite designed to enhance both operator awareness and data quality.
The Voyis Discovery Stereo Camera enables real-time 3D data visualization (with the Voyis VSLAM Powered by EIVA NaviSuite) and advanced subsea inspections, allowing operators to generate measurable and accurate, detailed reconstructions as they navigate complex underwater environments. This significantly elevates the Defender’s inspection capability, turning standard visual surveys into quantifiable assessments.
For piloting and situational awareness, the Voyis Discovery Camera provides wide-field, true-colour imaging with real-time enhancement. This improves operator confidence, especially in turbid conditions or confined spaces, ensuring the ROV is navigated safely while still capturing high-quality imagery.
To support downward-facing inspections, the Defender can also be outfitted with the Voyis Insight Micro Underwater Laser Scanner, mounted via a custom-designed Voyis ROV skid. This configuration offers synchronized still-image capture and precision laser data from a compact, lightweight module. The result is a complete dataset that combines high-resolution colour photography with accurate dimensional information, ideal to generate digital twins, structural assessments, scour evaluation, and general asset condition monitoring.
Together, these systems transform the VideoRay Defender into a powerful optical inspection platform. The integration showcases how advanced imaging and measurement tools can be mobilized on smaller, rapidly deployable ROVs without compromising performance. As we launch our Integration Spotlight series, this partnership reflects Voyis’ commitment to enabling operators to truly illuminate the unknown, regardless of vehicle size or mission complexity.
