Fish Welfare Analysis at Fish Farm

Company: Aqua-Cage Fisheries
Industry: Aquaculture
Vehicle Used: Deep Trekker Revolution
Voyis Products Used: Discovery Stereo

Summary: Voyis demonstrated its Discovery Stereo Camera at Aqua-Cage Fisheries to showcase high-resolution optical imaging for aquaculture operations. The system enabled accurate, non-invasive fish measurements, health assessments, and detailed inspections of nets and infrastructure. Even in turbid water, the camera delivered clear, actionable data to support efficient and sustainable fish farming.

The Project

In May, Voyis conducted a live demonstration of its Discovery Stereo Camera at Aqua-Cage Fisheries, a leading Canadian aquaculture facility on the shores of Lake Huron. The on site visit aimed to showcase how advanced optical imaging can enhance key aspects of fish farm operations, particularly where routine inspection and monitoring require both precision and efficiency. By integrating high resolution underwater vision directly into daily workflows, the demonstration highlighted the value of clear, quantifiable data in a fast-paced and environmentally challenging industry.

The Discovery Stereo Camera was deployed to perform a range of common aquaculture tasks, including fish measurement, health assessments, and net and infrastructure inspections. Operators observed how real-time 3D perception enables non-invasive fish sizing and biomass estimation, supporting more accurate stock management without handling stress. The camera’s high resolution stills also revealed subtle indicators of fish health, such as surface injuries or early signs of disease, that are often missed by traditional video systems, demonstrating the benefits of routine, close up observation.

Despite the turbid water conditions typical of aquaculture sites, the system delivered detailed visual records of submerged infrastructure, including netting, moorings, and structural frames. From detecting minor damage in net panels to identifying corrosion on pen components, the stereo camera proved its reliability as a tool for preventive maintenance and compliance. The demonstration not only validated the practical applications of optical imaging in fish farming but also underscored the potential of Voyis’ technology to support smarter, more sustainable aquaculture operations.

Being able to size fish, check their health, and inspect our nets all in one pass, with that level of clarity, was a real game changer for how we manage the farm and ensure everything runs smoothly day to day.

The Process

W

Collaborated with Aqua-Cage Fisheries to identify key inspection tasks relevant to daily operations, and the Discovery Stereo Vision System was integrated to the Deep Trekker Revolution ROV.

W

Used Voyis VSLAM powered by EIVA NaviSuite to create real-time 3D maps during inspections, enhancing spatial awareness and coverage tracking.

W

Conducted live demonstrations of fish sizing, health monitoring, and structural inspections with integrated 3D perception.

Final Results

The demonstration proved the Discovery Stereo Camera’s ability to deliver clear, high-resolution imaging and real-time 3D mapping in challenging aquaculture environments. Operators saw measurable improvements in fish monitoring, health assessments, and infrastructure inspections. Combining optical data with Voyis VSLAM powered by EIVA NaviSuite provided both visual clarity and precise spatial context for confident decision-making.
