The Recon is the first high-resolution optical imaging payload for high-speed AUVs, delivering crisp images with onboard image enhancement. With proven integration on both small and large vehicles, it’s simple to add or retrofit the modular payload onto your autonomous underwater vehicle.

All electronics are integrated into a payload module that directly interfaces with the target AUV and connects to a hydrodynamic lightbar that evenly projects light across the camera’s field of view. Recon LS

The Recon LS is the first all-in-one AUV payload to deliver complete optical inspection data with a stills camera and laser scanner. The modular solution utilizes the vehicle’s existing navigational data to deliver geo-referenced dynamic laser and stills data, all processed in real-time onboard the payload.

The solution can be provided in a single module, or with the laser and LED strobe in a hydrodynamic external module, enabling integration with even the smallest platforms. Upgrade your vehicle with the Recon to gain a complete visual understanding of your environment.

What is a Recon AUV Payload?

Integration of optical sensors into an AUV is much more complex than just strapping on the equipment – hydrodynamic, ballasting, and size requirements, make the integration much more complex. Our Recon AUV payloads take the core components from our laser and imaging systems and configure them into neutrally buoyant modules for specific AUVs that drastically simplify customer adoption. For small vehicles, an inline module and external lightbar is offered, while for larger vehicles a complete module section can be provided.  

What AUV plaforms are supported?

Standard payloads are available for standard 9” and 12” vehicles, in both Recon and Recon LS configurations. Designs have been tested on HII REMUS vehicles and the L3Harris IVER4, but interfaces can be readily adapted to integrate with all other vehicle platforms.

How is the payload controlled?

When purchased through a vehicle manufacturer as a standard payload, the system is controlled through the vehicle’s standard mission planning software. For custom integrations, the system is provided with a software application protocol interface (API) and developer guide to simplify the software integration and control. Electrical interfacing requirements are also provided.  

For long-duration missions, the payload can be enabled at specific points in the mission for localized target identification, resulting in a negligible impact on vehicle endurance. 

What is the data workflow?

Image and laser data is captured and processed in real-time onboard the module, then saved to either the local 2TB hard drive or to the shared vehicle storage. For large datasets, the ViewLS target extraction software can be used to efficiently download only the segments of interest, based on GPS location or mission time, to drastically improve the time to results. 

What format is laser data stored in?

The data collected with our underwater laser scanners is saved in a standard format for use with any point-cloud analysis software, including the popular opensource CloudCompare. 

Is the optical data integrated with other vehicle sensors?

Recon payloads are pre-integrated with the standard navigational sensors used on commercial AUVs, employing PPS time synchronization to ensure reliable alignment. The navigational stream is accepted in real-time to tag images with all available meta-data and generate geo-referenced 3D laser models.
